Visa route
Canada sets its entry requirement by a traveller's citizenship and travel document, not by country of residence, and the UAE's population is mostly expatriate, so a family's requirement usually follows the passport they hold rather than their UAE residence.
Holders of an Emirati passport are eTA-eligible for air travel. Residents who hold Indian, Pakistani or Egyptian passports are visa-required and apply for a visitor visa, and UAE residence does not change that. The UAE was not part of the Student Direct Stream.
For a study permit, a single applicant outside Quebec must show CAD 23,448 for a year of living costs from 1 September 2026, separate from tuition and travel, rising with each accompanying family member.
Currency and payments
The UAE dirham is pegged to the US dollar at 3.6725 dirhams per dollar, and the Central Bank of the UAE maintains the peg, so the dirham's value against the Canadian dollar tracks the US dollar.
The UAE maintains no restrictions on payments and transfers for current international transactions, so tuition and living-cost payments to a Canadian school can be sent abroad without exchange-control approval.
The Bank of Canada does not publish a daily exchange rate for the dirham, so no automatic dirham-to-Canadian-dollar conversion is shown on this page.
Agent landscape
Private education in the UAE is overseen at the emirate level: in Dubai by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) and in Abu Dhabi by the Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), which regulate and inspect schools.
In Dubai a training or education-services provider must hold a KHDA educational-services permit, renewed annually, to operate in the emirate. This oversight applies to providers operating inside the emirate rather than to overseas-study placement agents specifically.
Cities families choose
Canadian census data does not identify families by UAE residence, so the nearest measure is broader population groups that include many people with no UAE link. In the 2021 census about 694,000 people reported as Arab and about 360,000 as West Asian.
These groups concentrate in the largest urban centres: Montreal held the largest share of Canada's Arab population (about 35 percent), and Vancouver the second-largest West Asian population. Most private schools listed on MapleRank are in Ontario and British Columbia.
