Visa route
India was one of the countries served by the Student Direct Stream, the fast-track study-permit route that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada closed on 8 November 2024. Indian applicants now use the standard study-permit stream, with no nationality-based fast track.
The standard stream asks for proof of first-year tuition plus living costs. For applications made on or after 1 September 2026, a single applicant outside Quebec must show CAD 23,448 for a year of living costs, separate from tuition and travel; it was CAD 22,895 before that date, and the figure is adjusted over time.
Canada runs Visa Application Centres in ten Indian cities, including New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Jalandhar, Pune and Ahmedabad, where applicants submit documents and give biometrics by appointment.
Currency and payments
Money is sent from India under the Reserve Bank of India's Liberalised Remittance Scheme, which lets each resident, including a minor, remit up to US$250,000 per financial year (April to March) for permitted purposes, and study abroad is one of them. Remittances go through an authorised-dealer bank, which applies the limit.
A tax collected at source (TCS) applies only to the part of a family's yearly education remittances above ten lakh rupees (one million rupees), a threshold raised from seven lakh in the 2025-26 budget. Where the education remittance is funded by a loan from a specified financial institution, no TCS applies.
For education remittances not funded by such a loan, the 2026-27 budget reduced the TCS rate on the amount above ten lakh rupees from 5 percent to 2 percent.
Cities families choose
In the 2021 census, more than 2.57 million people in Canada reported as South Asian, the largest racialized group at 7.1 percent of the population, and 44 percent of them were born in India.
South Asians concentrate in a few metropolitan areas: the Toronto area holds 46 percent of Canada's South Asian population and Vancouver 14 percent, with Calgary, Edmonton and Montreal at about 6, 5 and 5 percent.
Within those areas South Asians make up a large share of individual cities: 52 percent of Brampton, 38 percent of Surrey, 26 percent of Abbotsford-Mission and 25 percent of Mississauga. Most private schools listed on MapleRank are in Ontario and British Columbia, the two provinces that contain these communities.
