Visa route
Hong Kong applicants use Canada's standard study-permit process; there is no dedicated or fast-track study stream for Hong Kong, and it was not part of the Student Direct Stream.
For applications made on or after 1 September 2026, a single applicant outside Quebec must show CAD 23,448 to cover a year of living costs, separate from tuition and travel. The figure is set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and revised over time, so a family should confirm the current amount when it applies.
Currency and payments
The Hong Kong dollar is linked to the US dollar under the Linked Exchange Rate System that the Hong Kong Monetary Authority has run since 1983, held at about HK$7.80 to the dollar within a 7.75 to 7.85 band.
Hong Kong applies no foreign-exchange controls and the dollar is freely convertible; Article 112 of the Basic Law requires the free flow of capital into and out of Hong Kong. A family can remit Canadian tuition and living costs through an ordinary bank transfer, with no annual purchase quota or approval to obtain first.
Agent landscape
Overseas-education advising in Hong Kong is served by an industry association, the Hong Kong International Education Consultants Association, which describes itself as a self-regulating body whose members are expected to meet ethical and business standards and are admitted through a probationary period and sponsorship by existing members.
It is a voluntary body, so membership signals that a consultant has agreed to its standards rather than holding a government licence.
Cities families choose
In the 2021 census, about 220,000 people in Canada were born in Hong Kong, 12.8 percent of the Chinese populations in Canada, most having immigrated between 1987 and 1997.
Hong Kong-born residents are even more concentrated in the two largest metros than the Chinese population overall: about 46 percent live in the Toronto area and 36 percent in the Vancouver area, clustering in municipalities such as Richmond near Vancouver and Markham near Toronto. Most private schools listed on MapleRank are in Ontario and British Columbia.
